Hops, originally grown by the ancient Romans as a garden plant, were later used for their medicinal properties, especially for calming nerves and aiding digestion. Native to North America, Europe, and Asia, hops’ female flowers, called 'strobiles,' are used in both medicine and beer production.
Hops are known for soothing anxiety, insomnia, and digestive issues, and also have antispasmodic and antimicrobial effects. They stimulate appetite and digestion, and are commonly used in sachets or tea for sleep. Traditionally, hops were used in India, China, and by the Cherokee for pain relief, headaches, and inflammation.
For horses, hops help with nervousness, appetite loss, and digestion.
ACTIONS: Sedative, anti-spasmodic, digestive tonic, antimicrobial, pain-relieving.
Note: Hops may interfere with hormone therapy and can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Avoid use in depression.
